- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; Abū Maʿshar narrated to us, from Saʿīd, from Abū Hurayrah:
He passed by the house of Ibn al-Akhnas while they were eating tharid (bread soaked in meat broth) and shiwāʾ (roast meat). They said, “Sit with us, O Abū Hurayrah.” He replied, ⦗321⦘ “What are you eating?” They said, “Tharid and roast.” He said, “You are tasting food that never reached Abū al-Qāsim—may Allah bless him and grant him peace,” and he wept. Then he said, “A new moon would appear and then another, yet no fire was ever lit in any of the houses of the family of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; nothing was baked and nothing was cooked.” They asked, “How did they live, then?” He answered, “On the two black things: dates and water. He did, however, have neighbors from the Anṣār—may Allah reward them well—who owned milking animals and would send him some of their milk.”
