Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; ʿUwayd—known as al-ʿĀbid—narrated to us, from Ibn Sahl, from Sulaymān ibn Rūmān, the freedman of ʿUrwah, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah—may Allah have mercy on her—who said:

“By Him Who sent Muḥammad with the truth, he never so much as saw a sieve, nor did he eat bread made from sifted flour from the time Allah sent him until He was taken.”

I asked, “How, then, did you eat the barley?”

She replied, “We would blow on it—uff, uff—to remove the chaff, and then we would eat it.”
