Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

2334 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿAli ibn Ishaq narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah informed us; Maʿmar informed us, from Yahya, from al-Mukhtar, from al-Hasan, who said:

“Indeed, by Allah, the doors were never closed in front of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ⦗320⦘ nor was any curtain set up to screen him off, nor were great platters of food served to him in the morning or the evening. Rather, he remained accessible—whoever wished to meet the Prophet of Allah could meet him. He would sit on the ground, his food was placed on the ground, he wore coarse clothing, rode a donkey, let his servant ride behind him, and, by Allah, he would lick his own hand.”
