Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

2325 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; al-Ḥakam ibn Nāfiʿ narrated to us; Ismaʿil ibn ʿAyyash narrated to us, from Shurahbil ibn Muslim al-Khawlani:

Two men came looking for Abu Muslim al-Khawlani at his home, but a member of his household told them, “He is in the mosque.” They went there and found him in the act of bowing. They waited for him to finish and began counting his bows: one of them tallied three hundred, the other four hundred, before he concluded.

When he emerged they said, “Abu Muslim, we were sitting behind you waiting for you ⦗319⦘.”

He replied, “Had I known you were there, I would have come out to you. It was not fitting for you to keep count of my prayer. And I swear to you both: abundant sujūd (prostration) will be of greater benefit on the Day of Resurrection.”
