2322 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; ʿAli ibn Muslim al-Tusi told me; Sayyār narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allah ibn Shumayṭ narrated to us; my father narrated to me, saying:
Abu Muslim al-Khawlāni used to go about lamenting the state of Islam. He came to Muʿāwiyah, and it was reported to Muʿāwiyah, “Abu Muslim is walking around mourning for Islam.” Muʿāwiyah therefore summoned him and asked, “What are you doing, Abu Muslim? Are you really mourning Islam?” He replied, “Yes.” Then Abu Muslim turned to Muʿāwiyah and said, “If you do good, you will be rewarded with good, and if you do evil, you will be repaid for it. O Muʿāwiyah, even if you dealt justly with every inhabitant of the earth and then wronged a single man, that one act of injustice would outweigh all your justice.”
