Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

2315 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me; Abū al-Mughīra narrated to us; Ṣafwān narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr and others reported that Abū Muslim al-Khawlānī—may Allah have mercy on him—was once approached by a man who complained about how much he suffered from people’s hurtful behavior. Abū Muslim said to him, “If you censure people, they will censure you; if you leave them alone, they will not leave you alone; and if you flee from them, they will overtake you.”

The man asked, “Then what should I do?”

He replied, “They are your quarry for the Day of your poverty—that Day when you will stand in need—so take something from them for nothing.”
