Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

2313 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Abu ʿAbd Allah—Muhammad ibn Hisham, our neighbor—narrated to us; Maʿmar ibn Sulayman narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Bishr informed us, from al-Aʿmash, from Mujahid, from ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr, who said:

“Allah—exalted is He—bestows the life of this world upon both those He loves and those He does not love, yet He grants the religion only to those He loves. Thus, when Allah loves a servant He blesses him with faith. Whoever then recoils from confronting an enemy in battle, balks at struggling through the night in worship, and is tight-fisted with his wealth when it comes to spending it, let him increase in tasbīḥ (saying ‘subḥān Allāh’), taḥmīd (saying ‘al-ḥamdu lillāh’), and tahlīl (saying ‘lā ilāha illā Allāh’).”
