2310 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Abu Usamah narrated to us; Badr ibn Jalil al-Asadi narrated to me; Ismaʿil ibn Saʿid narrated to me. He said: “I entered upon Hayyah al-ʿUrani, and he placed before me some duqqah (a simple pounded seasoning) and a rutbah—that is, al-qidāḥ, a kind of fresh date stalk—and said, ‘Eat! Had there been in the house anything better than this, I would have served it to you.’ Then he added, ‘’Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: When your Muslim brother visits you, feed him with the finest you have in your house; and if he is fasting, then offer him oil so that he may anoint himself.’”
