- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ayyūb al-Khurasānī narrated to us, from Ibn ʿUyaynah, who said:
“When Job—peace be upon him—was stricken with his ordeal, he sent for his companions and asked, ‘Do you know for what reason this has befallen me?’
They answered, ‘So far as we can see, nothing apparent in your conduct would warrant it—unless you have kept something hidden from us of which we have no knowledge.’
They then rose and left. On the way they met a man less learned than they, who said, ‘Why did the Prophet of God—peace be upon him—call you?’
When they told him, he said, ‘I can inform him why this calamity has come upon him.’ So he went to Job, questioned him, and said, ‘It is because you once took a drink without praising God or thanking Him for the blessing, and perhaps you once sheltered in the shade without showing gratitude for the favor.’”
