2298 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Harun ibn Maʿruf narrated to me; al-Walid ibn Shujaʿ narrated to us; Damrah narrated, from ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Malik, who said:
“A man accompanied Ibn Muhayriz in the sāqah—the rearguard of the army—while they were in Byzantine territory ⦗315⦘. When the man was about to leave him, Ibn Muhayriz said, ‘Advise me.’
The man replied, ‘If you can be someone who recognizes others while remaining unrecognized, then do so. If you can be one who asks yet is not asked, then do so. And if you can walk to others so that none need walk to you, then do so.’”
