2260 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Kathir ibn Hisham narrated to us; Jaʿfar ibn Burqan narrated to us; Maimun ibn Mihran narrated that ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwan arrived in Madinah. When he awoke from his midday nap he said to his chamberlain, “Go and see whether any of my young men are in the mosque.” The chamberlain went out and saw no one there except Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib. He pointed at him with his finger, but Saʿid did not move. So he approached him and said, “Did you not see me signaling to you?” He replied, “What do you want?” The chamberlain said, “The Commander of the Believers has awakened and said, ‘See whether there is anyone in the mosque from among my young men.’”
Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib answered, “I am not one of his young men.”
The chamberlain returned and reported, “I found no one in the mosque except an old man to whom I pointed, but he did not rise; then I told him that the Commander of the Believers had asked. He said, ‘See whether you can find anyone of my young men.’ He added, ‘Indeed I am not one of the Commander of the Believers’ young men.’”
ʿAbd al-Malik said, “That is Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib; leave him be.”
