2259 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Muʾammal narrated to us; Sufyan – a Qurashi elder named al-Walid ibn al-Mughira – narrated to us. He said: Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib told me, “Keep to seclusion, for it is an act of worship, and stay on the ⦗311⦘ shiwaʾ of the Ḥaram.” My father explained, “He means its outskirts: if what is there is good, it will lie within the Ḥaram, but if it is bad, it will be in the ḥil (the area outside the Sanctuary). I have been informed that the people of Mecca, or those who dwell in Mecca, will not perish until the Ḥaram is, in their eyes, no different from the ḥil.”
