Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

2250 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us; Ibn Jabir narrated to us, who said:

“We used to go on campaign with ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurasani. He would spend the night in prayer, and when a third—or half—of the night had passed he would call out from his pavilion in a voice we could all hear:

‘O ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazid! O Yazid ibn Yazid! O Hisham ibn al-Ghāz! O so-and-so son of so-and-so! Rise, perform wuduʾ (ritual ablution) and pray. Standing in prayer during this night and fasting during this day are easier than drinking scalding pus and being rent by shards of iron. Quick, quick!’

Then he would turn back to his prayer.
