ʿAbd Allāh related to us; my father related to us; Ghawth ibn Jābir related to us, saying: I heard ʿAqīl mention that he had heard Wahb ibn Munabbih being asked, “What was the religious code of Job, peace be upon him?” He answered, “Pure monotheism, keeping the bonds between people upright, and whenever anyone wished to ask something of Allah, he would first fall down in prostration and then present his request.”

He was then asked, “What sort of wealth did he possess?” He replied, “He owned three thousand faddāns of land; with every faddān there was a male slave, with every slave a bondwoman, with every bondwoman a she-donkey, and fourteen thousand sheep. Never did a guest of his spend the night outside his door, and he never ate a meal without a poor person sharing it with him.”
