Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

2235 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said, “My father narrated to me; Abu al-Rabiʿ al-Wasiti narrated to us; he said: I heard Hafs ibn Ghiyath say:

Sufyan al-Thawri once came in to see Mujammaʿ al-Taymi. Noticing a tear in Sufyan’s izar (waist-wrap), Mujammaʿ took out four dirhams and handed them to him, saying, “Buy yourself a new izar.”

Sufyan replied, “I have no need of it.”

Mujammaʿ said, “True—you have no need, but I am the one who needs to give.”

So Sufyan accepted the money and bought an izar with it. Afterwards he would say, “Mujammaʿ clothed me—may Allah reward him well.”

Sufyan also said, “Of everything I have learned, there is nothing I hope will remain untainted more than my love for Mujammaʿ al-Taymi.”
