- ʿAbd Allāh related to us; my father related to us; Yazīd related to us; Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim informed us, saying: I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr say:
“Job—peace be upon him—had two brothers. One day they came to visit him and noticed a foul odor. They remarked, ‘Had Allah known any good in Job, He would not have brought him to such a state.’ Nothing he had ever heard wounded him more than those words. He prayed:
‘O Allah, if You know that I have never spent a single night with a full stomach while aware of someone who was hungry, then confirm my truthfulness.’
He was immediately vindicated, and both of them heard it. Then he said:
‘O Allah, if You know that I have never worn a shirt while knowing of someone who lacked clothing, then confirm my truthfulness.’
Again he was vindicated, and they heard it. Then he fell down in prostration and said:
‘O Allah, I will not raise my head until You remove from me this affliction.’
So Allah lifted his suffering.
Yazīd also recounted on another occasion: ‘Had Job possessed any merit with Allah, He would not have subjected him to all of this.’”}
