2228 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Dawud ibn ʿAmr narrated to us; ʿAbthar narrated to us; Abu Husayn narrated to us; from Mujahid; from ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr al-Laythi, who said: When winter arrived he would declare, “O people of the Quran! The night has grown long for your standing in prayer, and the day has grown short for your fasting, so take advantage of it. If the long night wears you out so that you cannot persevere through it, if you fear the enemy so that you will not fight him, and if you are tight-fisted with your wealth so that you will not spend it, then at least remember Allah—exalted is He—abundantly.”
