Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

2208 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿAbd al-Razzaq narrated to us, saying: Dawud ibn Ibrahim informed us that a lion once blocked the travelers’ path and kept them confined on the road for an entire night. The people pressed against one another in the darkness, but when the time of sahar (the last portion of the night before dawn) arrived, the lion departed. The travelers then scattered to the right and left, threw themselves down, and fell asleep. Tawus, however, stood up and began to pray. A man said to him, “You have been standing in worship since the night began!” Tawus replied, “And who sleeps at the hour of sahar?”
