- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Ibn Numayr narrated to us; al-Aʿmash narrated from Khaythamah, who said:
“The Angel of Death once came to Solomon—peace be upon him—and he was a friend of his. Solomon asked him, ‘Why is it that you enter one household and take every member of it, yet leave the household next to them without taking a single person?’
The Angel replied, ‘I know no more about whose souls I am to take than you do. I merely stand beneath the Throne, and slips inscribed with names are cast to me…’”
