2192 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Husayn ibn ʿAli al-Juʿfi narrated to us, from Fudayl ibn ʿIyad, who said:
“Saʿid ibn Jubayr once passed by Wahb ibn Munabbih, and he said to his companion, ‘Let us go in and visit him.’
So he entered and complained to Wahb about the hardship he had suffered at the hands of al-Hajjaj and how the man kept driving him from place to place.
Wahb ibn Munabbih replied, ‘When the awliyāʾ (friends) of Allah are made to walk a path of hardship, they grow hopeful; but when they are made to walk a path of ease, they become fearful.’”
