Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr narrated to us; al-Aʿmash narrated from Khaythamah, and from Ḥamzah, from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, who said:

“The Angel of Death once entered upon Solomon—peace be upon him—and began staring fixedly at one of the men sitting in his court. When the Angel left, the man asked, ‘Who was that?’ Solomon replied, ‘That was the Angel of Death, peace be upon him.’ The man said, ‘I noticed him looking at me as though he wanted me.’ Solomon asked, ‘What do you wish, then?’ He answered, ‘I want the wind to carry me and set me down in India.’ So Solomon summoned the wind, which bore him away and left him in India.

Later the Angel of Death came back to Solomon—peace be upon him. Solomon said to him, ‘You were gazing intently at one of my companions, were you not?’ The Angel replied, ‘I was indeed amazed by him, for I had been commanded to seize his soul in India while he was sitting here with you.’”
