2182 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Abu Maʿmar narrated to me; Sulayman ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, who said: We heard it from Wahb ibn Munabbih, who said:
“Nothing with which Allah—glorified and exalted is He—is worshipped is superior to the intellect. When a man endowed with it leaves his house, everyone who meets him senses that he is beneath him. He is secure from arrogance, and people expect only good from him. He follows those who came before him and is an exemplar for those who come after him, until:
• humiliation is dearer to him than honour;
• poverty is dearer to him than wealth;
• he regards his own many deeds as few, yet counts the few deeds of others as many;
• his livelihood is no more than bare sustenance, and he never grows weary of meeting people’s needs;
• poverty attained through what is lawful is dearer to him than wealth gained through what is unlawful;
• poverty while obeying Allah is dearer to him than wealth while disobeying Allah.
Then he said, ‘And the tenth—what is the tenth? Through it his glory is perfected and his renown exalted: that he leaves his house and no one who meets him fails to feel himself inferior to him.’”
