Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

2172 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us; Hishām ibn ʿUrwah narrated to us, from his father, who said:

He used to say, "mā aḥsana ṣunʿa Allāh — glorified and exalted is He — ilayya (How excellent is Allah’s kindness to me!). He has taken one from me yet left me three." His leg had been amputated because of an ulcer that had started at the knee. He would also say, "wa-aymunuka la-in kunta ibtalayta la-qad ʿāfayta, wa-li-an akhadhta la-qad abqayta (By Your right, if You have put [me] to trial, You have indeed granted me well-being; and if You have taken [something], You have surely spared [much])."
