Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

2148 – ʿAbdullah narrated to us; he said, “I found in my father’s notebook: Abu Muʿawiyah al-Ghalabi narrated to us; he said: A man once addressed Hisham—the brother of Dhu al-Rumma—when Hisham was preparing to travel to Mecca. He said to him: ‘My parting counsel is that you fear Allah—exalted is He—and perform each prayer at its appointed time. You are going to pray in any case, so perform it in a way that benefits you. And beware of becoming the dog of your company, for every party has a dog that barks in their defense: if what he does is good, they thank him; but if it is disgraceful, he alone carries the blame on their behalf. Therefore, beware of becoming the dog of your company.’”
