2147 – ʿAbdullah narrated to us; he said, “I found in my father’s notebook: Abu Muʿawiyah al-Ghalabi narrated to us; a man related to me that another man once called out to Sulayman ibn ʿAbd al-Malik while he was seated upon the pulpit, saying, ‘O Sulayman, fear Allah and remember the Day of the Proclamation!’
Sulayman thereupon stepped down from the pulpit in anger and had the man brought before him. He said, ‘I am Sulayman; what is the Day of the Proclamation?’ The man replied, quoting the verse: ‘Then a herald will proclaim among them, “The curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers”’ (al-Aʿraf 7:44).
Sulayman asked, ‘What wrong has been done to you?’ The man answered, ‘Your agent has taken my land by force.’ Sulayman immediately wrote to his agent, ordering him: ‘Return his land to him—and give him my land along with it.’
