2137 – ʿAbdullah narrated to us; Abu Maʿmar related to me; Abdullah ibn Idris reported: I heard my uncle recount that Kurdus used to deliver homilies to us during the time of al-Hajjaj. He would say, “Paradise is not attained except through deeds done for its sake. Purify your yearning with a sense of awe, persevere in righteous works, and meet Allah with sound hearts and sincere actions.” He would frequently repeat, “Whoever is afraid sets out by night—whoever is afraid sets out by night.”
