2093 – ʿAbdullah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Ādam narrated to us; Abū Bakr narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim, who said: “Dharr was older than Abū Wāʾil, so whenever the two of them sat together Abū Wāʾil would not speak in Dharr’s presence. I used to hear Abū Wāʾil, when he was alone in his house, saying in his prostration:
‘My Lord, forgive me; my Lord, pardon me. If You pardon me, it will be a lasting pardon from You; but if You punish me, You punish me without injustice and none can forestall You.’
He would then sob with the fiercest sobbing of a bereaved mother that I have ever heard. Even if he had been offered payment for someone to see him weep, he would not have allowed it.”
