2088 – ʿAbdullah narrated to us; Khalad b. Aslam narrated to me; Saʿid b. Khuthaym narrated to us, from Muhammad b. Khalid al-Dabbi, who said:
“We had no idea how Khaythama b. ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Abi Sabrah recited the Qur’an until he fell ill and grew gravely weak. His wife came, sat before him, and wept. He asked her, ‘What makes you weep? Death is inevitable.’ The woman replied, ‘After you, every man will be forbidden to me.’ Khaythama said to her, ‘This is not what I wanted from you. I was only afraid of one man—my brother Muhammad b. ʿAbd al-Rahman. He is a profligate man who drinks this wine. ⦗291⦘ I could not bear that wine should be drunk in my house after the Qur’an has been recited here every third night.’”
