2058 – ʿAbd Allah related to us; Ahmad ibn Ibrahim reported to us; ʿAli ibn Ishaq narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubarak informed me; al-Hasan ibn ʿAmr al-Qawariri—meaning Abu al-Malih—said: A freedman of ʿAmr ibn ʿUtbah ibn Farqad told me: “One day we woke up during the heat of midday and went looking for ʿAmr ibn ʿUtbah. We found him on a mountain, prostrating, while a cloud cast its shade over him. Whenever we set out on campaign we posted no sentries, so constant was his prayer. One night I saw him praying when we heard a lion’s roar. We all fled, but he remained standing in prayer and did not turn away. We asked him, ‘Were you not afraid of the lion?’ He replied, ‘I am too ashamed before my Lord—Exalted is He—to fear anyone other than Him.’”
