- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Yazīd narrated to us; Abū al-Ashhab narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Ayman—the freedman of Kaʿb ibn Sawwār—narrated to me, saying:
“While the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was speaking with his Companions, a poor man arrived and sat down beside a wealthy man. The wealthy man pulled his garments away from him. The face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, changed, and he said,
‘O so-and-so, did you fear that your wealth might cling to him, or that his poverty might cling to you?’
He replied, ‘O Messenger of Allah, is wealth something blameworthy?’
He said, ‘Yes. Your wealth is summoning you to the Fire, whereas his poverty is summoning him to Paradise.’
The man then asked, ‘What will save me from it?’
He said, ‘Share with him.’
The man said, ‘Then I will do so.’
But the other replied, ‘I have no need of it.’
He said, ‘Then seek forgiveness and pray for your brother.’”
