Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

2023 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us—my father narrated to us—Hajjaj narrated to us—and Muhammad ibn Talhah narrated to us—from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Thurdan Abu Qays al-Awdi, who said:

Al-Aswad ibn Yazid used to drive himself hard in fasting and worship until his body shrank and his complexion turned sallow. ʿAlqamah would say to him, “Alas for you! Why do you torment this body?” and he would reply, “The matter is indeed serious—truly serious.”
