2021 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us—my father narrated to us—Maʿmar ibn Sulaymān, who was from al-Raqqah, narrated to us—ʿAbd Allah ibn Bishr narrated to us: ʿAlqamah ibn Qays and al-Aswad ibn Yazīd once performed the pilgrimage together. Al-Aswad was a man of great devotion, so he fasted one day. When the people set out in the scorching midday heat, his face had become ashen. ʿAlqamah approached, tapped him on the thigh, and said, “Abu ʿUmar, will you not fear Allah concerning this body of yours? Why are you putting it through such torment?” Al-Aswad replied, “Abu Shibl, al-jiddu al-jiddu (utmost seriousness, utmost seriousness)!”
