2017 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar ibn Maysarah al-Qawariri narrated to me; Muʿādh ibn Hishām narrated to us; his father narrated to me, from Qatādah, from Zurārah ibn Abī Awfā, from Usayr ibn Jābir, who said:
Whenever reinforcement units from Yemen arrived, ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah have mercy on him—would ask them, “Is Uways ibn ʿĀmir al-Qaranī among you?” This went on until he finally met Uways and said, “Are you Uways ibn ʿĀmir?” He answered, “Yes.” ʿUmar asked, “Are you of (the clan of) Murād and then of Qaran?” He replied, “Yes.” ʿUmar said, “Were you once afflicted with baras (leukoderma) and cured of it except for a spot the size of a dirham?” He said, “Yes.” ʿUmar asked, “Do you have a mother?” He said, “Yes.”
ʿUmar then said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Uways ibn ʿĀmir will come to you with the reinforcements from Yemen, from Murād and then from Qaran. He was afflicted with baras and was cured of it except for a spot the size of a dirham. He has a mother to whom he is devoted. Were he to swear by Allah, Allah would surely honor his oath. So if you are able to have him ask forgiveness for you ⦗281⦘, then do so.’ Therefore, ask Allah to forgive me.” So Uways asked forgiveness for him.
ʿUmar then said, “Where are you headed?” He replied, “To Kūfah.” ʿUmar said, “Shall I write to its governor so that he may look after you?” He replied, “I would rather remain among the common folk.”
The following year a notable man from Kūfah performed ḥajj and met ʿUmar. ʿUmar asked him about Uways: “How did you leave him?” He said, “In a humble house with few possessions.” ʿUmar said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Uways ibn ʿĀmir will come to you with the reinforcements from Yemen, from Murād and then from Qaran. He was afflicted with baras and was cured of it except for a spot the size of a dirham. He has a mother to whom he is devoted. Were he to swear by Allah, Allah would surely honor his oath. So if you are able to have him ask forgiveness for you, then do so.’”
When the man returned to Kūfah, he went to Uways and said, “Ask Allah to forgive me.” Uways replied, “You have just come from a righteous journey, so ask Allah to forgive me.” The man said, “Did you meet ʿUmar?” He answered, “Yes,” and then Uways asked forgiveness for him. When people realized who he was, he left quietly.
Usayr said: I had given him a cloak, and whenever anyone saw him wearing it he would ask, “How did Uways come by that cloak?”
