2009 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: My father narrated to me; ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us; Husayn ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from an Arab informant, from a man—whom I know only as Saʿid al-Azraq—from Muhammad ibn Wasiʿ, who said:

Uways once saw a man praying who kept getting up and sitting back down. He asked, “What is the matter with you?” The man replied, “I rise to pray, and Satan comes to me saying, ‘You are only showing off, so sit down.’ Then my own soul urges me toward prayer, so I stand again, and he says, ‘You are only showing off, so sit down.’ ”

Uways said, “If you were alone, would you still perform this prayer?” He answered, “Yes.” Uways replied, “Then pray, for you are not showing off.”
