1997 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Ahmad ibn Ibrahim narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Yazid ibn Khunays al-Makki narrated to us; from Sufyan who said:
“It reached us from the mother of Rabiʿ ibn Khuthaym that she would call out to her son, saying, ‘Rabiʿ, will you not sleep?’ He would answer, ‘Mother, when night falls upon someone who fears his sins, it is only right that he not sleep.’
“When he grew older and she saw how much he wept and stayed awake, she called to him: ‘My son, could it be that you have killed someone?’ He replied, ‘Yes, Mother, I have killed a slain man.’
“She said, ‘And who is this slain person, my son, so that we may go to his family and they might pardon you? By Allah, if they knew how much wakefulness and weeping you endure afterwards, they would surely show you mercy.’
“He said, ‘Mother, the one I have killed is my own self.’”
