Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbd Allāh related to us—he said: my father related to me; ʿAbd al-Wahhāb related to us, from Saʿīd, from Qatādah, who said:

We were told that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—once entered upon the People of the Bench (Ahl al-Suffah), the place where the poor Muslims gathered. They used to patch their garments with pieces of leather, for they had no cloth with which to mend them. He said, “Are you better today, or will you be better on the day when one of you goes out in a fine suit and comes back in another, a large bowl of food is set before him in the morning and another in the evening, and he hangs curtains around his house as the Kaʿbah is draped?”

They replied, “No; rather, we shall be better on that day.”

The Prophet answered, “No; rather, you are better today.”
