- ʿAbd Allāh related to us—he said: my father related to us; Yazīd related to us; Hishām ibn Ḥassān informed us; he said: I heard al-Ḥasan say:
“By Allah, whenever Allah opens up this world to a person and he does not fear that it might be a stratagem by which he is being tested, then his knowledge has surely waned and his judgment has failed. And whenever Allah withholds this world from a servant and he does not believe that the withholding has been chosen as something better for him, then his knowledge has surely waned and his judgment has failed.”
٢٠٠ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أبِي، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، أَنْبَأَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ: «وَاللَّهِ مَا أَحَدٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ بَسَطَ اللَّهُ – Exalté soit-Il – لَهُ دُنْيَا، فَلَمْ يَخَفْ أَنْ يَكُونَ قَدْ مُكِرَ بِهِ فِيهَا، إِلَّا كَانَ قَدْ نَقَصَ عِلْمُهُ وَعَجَزَ رَأْيُهُ، وَمَا أَمْسَكَهَا اللَّهُ – Exalté soit-Il – عَنْ عَبْدٍ، فَلَمْ يَظُنَّ أَنَّهُ قَدْ خِيرَ لَهُ فِيهَا إِلَّا كَانَ قَدْ نَقَصَ عِلْمُهُ وَعَجَزَ رَأْيُهُ»
