Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1951 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muhammad ibn al-ʿAlaʾ al-Hamdani, Abu Kurayb, related to me; Abu ʿAmir al-Asadi told us; Sufyan al-Thawri narrated:

A son of ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Rabiʿ ibn Khuthaym passed away, and he composed the following lines of poetry:

I now summon no physician to attend his cure;
Instead I call upon You, O Sender of the rain.
Grant me steadfast patience for what has struck me,
And decree for me therein the soundest course.
Indeed, I hope that this calamity of mine
Will earn me reward, though I cannot be sure.
