Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1947 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Ahmad ibn Ibrahim narrated to us; Abu Jaʿfar al-Suwaydi narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAdiyy, from ʿIsa ibn Farrukh, who said:

Whenever night fell and he noticed that the people were heedless, al-Rabiʿ ibn Khuthaym would go out to the cemetery and roam among the graves, calling out, “Ya ahl al-qubur (O inhabitants of the graves), kuntum wa kunna—you once were (alive) as we are.” When daybreak arrived, it was as though he had been raised up from among the inhabitants of the graves.
