1945 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Dawraqi narrated to us; Abu Bakr ibn ʿAyyash narrated to us; ʿIsa narrated to us, from Sulayman, from Abu Waʾil, who said:
We went out together with ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿud—may Allah have mercy on him—and with us was al-Rabiʿ ibn Khuthaym. We passed by a blacksmith, and ʿAbd Allah stopped to look at a piece of iron glowing in the fire. When al-Rabiʿ caught sight of it, he swayed, about to collapse. We continued on until we reached a great furnace on the bank of the Euphrates; when ʿAbd Allah saw it, with flames blazing inside, he recited:
“When it sees them from a distant place, they will hear it raging and roaring; and when they are flung into a narrow place therein, chained together, they will cry out there for destruction.” (al-Furqan 25:12–13)
At that, al-Rabiʿ ibn Khuthaym fell unconscious, so we carried him to his family. ʿAbd Allah kept watch beside him until the time of ẓuhr (the noon prayer), but he did not come to. He remained with him until ⦗270⦘ ʿasr (the afternoon prayer), yet he still had not revived; then he stayed until maghrib (the sunset prayer), and only after that did al-Rabiʿ regain consciousness. ʿAbd Allah then returned to his own household.
