1944 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Ahmad ibn Ibrahim narrated to me; Yahya ibn Maʿin narrated to me; Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us; my father narrated to me, from Saʿid ibn Masruq, from al-Rabiʿ ibn Khuthaym:

He once put on a sunbulāni shirt that had cost three, or perhaps four, dirhams. When he stretched the sleeve, it reached his fingernails; when he let it fall, it stopped at his forearm. Whenever he caught sight of the whiteness of the garment he would say, “O little servant of Allah, lower yourself before your Lord—exalted is He!” Then he would add, “O tiny morsel of flesh! O small puppet! What will the two of you do when the mountains are set in motion and are crushed to dust—‘and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, and on that Day Hell is brought forth’” (al-Fajr 89:23).
