1939 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muhammad narrated to me; Muhammad ibn Saʿid ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; from Nusayr; from Bakr ibn Maʿiz, who said:
Al-Rabīʿ said, “I have found no example that depicts al-qaḍāʾ (the divine decree) better than the following.” Bakr ibn Maʿiz then related: Al-Rabīʿ was either given a horse or bought one for thirty thousand, and he rode it during a military expedition. Later he sent his servant to gather fodder while he himself stood in prayer, having tethered the horse. The servant returned and asked, “O Rabīʿ, where is your horse?” He replied, “It has been stolen, Yasar.” The servant exclaimed, “And you were looking right at it?” He answered, “Yes, Yasar. I was conversing with my Lord—exalted is He—and nothing ⦗269⦘ could distract me from that communion.
“O Allah, he has stolen from me whereas I would never have stolen from him. O Allah, if he is wealthy, guide him; and if he is poor, enrich him.” He repeated this supplication three times.
