1934 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; al-Walid ibn Shujaʿ narrated to us; my father narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Zubayd narrated to me, from al-Rabiʿ ibn Khuthaym:
A beggar once came to him seeking alms, so he went out to meet him on a bitterly cold night and found the man trembling from the chill. Al-Rabiʿ removed a burnus (hooded cloak) of his—he used to say it was made of khazz, a fine wool brocade—and clothed the man with it. Then he recited the verse, “You shall never attain al-birr (true righteousness) until you spend of that which you love.” ⦗Al ʿImran 3:92⦘
