1930 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Abu Hammam ibn Abi Badr al-Walid ibn Shujaʿ ibn al-Walid ibn Qays al-Sakuni narrated to us; he said: Saʿid ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Rabiʿ ibn Khaytham narrated to me, from Abu Tuʿmah Nusayr ibn Dhuʿluq, from Bakr ibn Maʿiz, who said:
ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿud once went to the bank of the Euphrates. When al-Rabiʿ ibn Khuthaym caught sight of the blacksmiths, he collapsed unconscious. Ibn Masʿud then carried him to his house. He went out and led the people in the Zuhr prayer, then returned and said, “O Rabiʿ! O Rabiʿ!” but received no reply. He went back and led the people in Zuhr once more, then returned and said, “O Rabiʿ! O Rabiʿ!” yet still he did not answer. He went and led them in the ʿAsr prayer, returned and said, “O Rabiʿ! O Rabiʿ!” but there was no response. He led them in Maghrib, returned and called, “O Rabiʿ! O Rabiʿ!”—still no answer. He led them in ʿIshaʾ, came back and said, “O Rabiʿ! O Rabiʿ!” but he did not answer until the chill of the pre-dawn touched him.
