1929 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Yusuf al-Saffar, the client of the Umayyad clan, narrated to me; Abu Bakr—meaning Ibn ʿAyyash—narrated to us from ʿAsim, who said: It was said to al-Rabiʿ ibn Khuthaym, “Will you not recite a line of poetry? Your companions used to quote poetry.” He replied, “Not a single word is uttered without it being recorded, and I would loathe to read in my record on the Day of Resurrection a line of poetry.”
