- ʿAbd Allāh related to us—my father related to us—ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd, meaning al-Muqriʾ, related to us—Ḥaywah related to us—Abū Hāniʾ informed me that Abū ʿAlī told him that he heard Faḍālah ibn ʿUbayd say:
“Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the people in prayer, certain men would collapse from their places during the prayer because of severe hunger; they were the People of the Bench (Aṣḥāb al-Ṣuffah). The Bedouins would remark, ‘These men must be mad!’ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concluded the prayer, he would turn toward them and say, ‘If you only knew what Allah has prepared for you, you would wish to be even poorer and more in need.’”
Faḍālah added, “I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on that day.”
