1904 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us, my father narrated to us, ʿAbd al-Samad narrated to us, and Malik ibn Dinar said: “I went in to visit a neighbor of mine who had fallen ill; he had been a toll collector. He said, ‘The One who shows mercy to the poor spoke to me in a dream and said, “Indeed, the One who shows mercy to the poor is angry with you.” He then said, “You are not of me, and I am not of you.” I asked him, “What is the matter?” He replied, “This.” Then he repeated the same words exactly as before, which startled me, so I asked, “Against whom?” He pointed with his hand to his chest—meaning himself.’”
