ʿAbdullah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; I was informed from Mālik ibn Dīnār, who said: “I passed by a monk in his hermitage. I called out to him, so he looked out toward me; we exchanged words, and he said to me—among other things—‘If you are able to raise an iron wall between yourself and your passions, then do so. And beware of any companion from whom you gain no benefit; whether he is near or far, do not keep his company.’

ʿAbdullah narrated to us; he said: I was informed, through Sayyār, from Jaʿfar, who said: ‘I heard Mālik ibn Dīnār and al-Muʿallā ibn Ziyād say: We heard al-Ḥasan saying…’
١٨٩٦ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، أُخْبِرْتُ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ قَالَ: مَرَرْتُ بِرَاهِبٍ فِي صَوْمَعَتِهِ، فَنَادَيْتُهُ فَأَشْرَفَ عَلَيَّ فَكَلَّمَنِي وَكَلَّمْتُهُ قَالَ: فَقَالَ لِي: فِيمَا يَقُولُ: إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ فِيمَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ الشَّهَوَاتِ حَائِطًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَافْعَلْ وَإِيَّاكَ وَكُلَّ جَلِيسٍ لَا تَسْتَفِيدُ مِنْهُ خَيْرًا فَلَا تُجَالِسْهُ قَرِيبًا كَانَ أَوْ بَعِيدًا "
