- ʿAbdullah narrated to us, saying, "My father narrated to me; Sayyār narrated to us; Jaʿfar narrated to us, who said: I heard Mālik ibn Dīnār supplicating:
‘O Allah, turn our hearts toward You until we come to know You well, uphold Your covenant well, and safeguard Your injunction well. O Allah, brand us with the mark of faith and clothe us in the garment of God-fearingness. O Allah, we repent to You before death and extend our greetings before the final summons. O Allah, cast upon us a glance from You that gathers for us every form of good—the good of this world and the good of the Hereafter.’
Mālik would then pause and say, ‘Do you think that by “the good of this world” I mean gold dinars and silver dirhams? What I mean is righteous deeds, so that I may meet You on the Day I meet You while You are pleased with me—out of hope in You and fear of You, O God of the heavens and God of the earth.’
Jaʿfar said, ‘He would then weep softly, and we would weep with him—may Allah have mercy on him.’
