Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbdullah narrated to us, saying, “My father narrated to me; Sayyār narrated to us; Jaʿfar narrated to us; and a man from Ṣanʿāʾ narrated to us, saying: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a dream and asked, “O Messenger of Allah, where are the budalāʾ (the spiritual substitutes) of your community?” He pointed with his hand toward al-Shām. I then said, “Is there not one of them in Iraq?” He replied, “Indeed—there is Muhammad ibn Wāsiʿ, Ḥassān ibn Abī Sinān, and Mālik ibn Dīnār, who walks among the people with a renunciation like that of Abū Dharr in his time.”’ Jaʿfar commented, ‘Had Mālik been among the Children of Israel, it would have been obligatory to relate his accounts.’
